Jinyu Sheng

Jinyu is a Full Professor in Physical Oceanography at Dalhousie University. Jinyu received his MSc and PhD in Physical Oceanography respectively in 1985 and 1990 from the Memorial University of Newfoundland. Jinyu was a Postdoctoral Fellow and then Research Associate in the Department of Oceanography at Dalhousie University between 1990 and 1998.  Jinyu has been a faculty member of Dalhousie University since 1999.   As a faculty member at Dalhousie, Jinyu served as the NSERC/MARTEC/MSC Industrial Research Chair (Junior and then Associate) in the Regional Ocean Modelling and Prediction between 1999 and 2008.  Jinyu also served as the Research Chair for the International Network to Improve Prediction of Model Extreme Marine Events between 2011 and 2016.

Jinyu’s main research interest is physical oceanography, including coastal and shelf dynamics, developments and applications of numerical ocean circulation and wave models, modelling and prediction of extreme marine conditions, and wave-current and ice-current interactions. He was awarded as the Applied Oceanography by the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society in 2018.

Jinyu served as an editor-in-chief for the journal of Regional Studies in Marine Science between 2017 and 2021. He was guest editors for several scientific journals including “Ocean Dynamics” “Atmosphere-Ocean” and 

Jinyu has been an enthusiastic volunteer in the Chinese community in Nova Scotia for than 30 years. Jinyu was the co-founder for the Halifax Chinese Language School (non-profit) and has been the Principal for the School since 1993. Jinyu received the Provincial Volunteer Award of Nova Scotia in 2013.
