The Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences (CFCAS) was formed in February 2000 through a formal "Agreement" between the Minister of the Environment and the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (CMOS) to set up a not-for-profit Foundation. CFCAS received a grant of $60 million from the Government of Canada to fund research in Canadian universities, over a period of 6 years, in the areas of climate system science, climate change, extreme weather, air quality, and marine environmental prediction. It received a second grant of $50 million in 2003 and its mandate was extended to 2010.
CMOS continues to play an important role in CFCAS in two main areas: (i) provision of the 'Members' of CFCAS, who must also hold membership on the CMOS Council, and (ii) assurance through oversight by the Members and by a CMOS-appointed ex-officio, non-voting CFCAS Trustee, that the bylaws and operating procedures of CFCAS meet the requirements outlined in the tri-partite Agreement which governs the activities of CFCAS. The Members of CFCAS also elect the CFCAS Board of Trustees, from a slate put forward by a Nominating Committee led by CMOS's ex-officio Trustee.
CFCAS enhances Canada's scientific capacity by funding the generation and dissemination of knowledge in areas of national importance and policy relevance, through focused support for excellent university-based research in climate and atmospheric sciences.
La Fondation canadienne pour les sciences du climat et de l'atmosphère (FCSCA), un organisme sans but lucratif, a été fondée en février 2000 en vertu d'une « entente » officielle entre le ministre de l'Environnement et la Société canadienne de météorologie et d'océanographie (SCMO). La FCSCA a reçu une subvention unique de 60 millions de dollars du gouvernement du Canada pour financer, sur une période de six ans, la recherche universitaire canadienne dans les domaines de la science du système climatique, des changements climatiques, des temps extrême, de la qualité de l'air et de la prédiction environnementale en milieu marin. Elle a obtenu en 2003 une deuxième subvention de 50 millions de dollars et un prolongement de son mandat jusqu'à 2010.
La Société canadienne de météorologie et d'océanographie (SCMO) continue de jouer un rôle important au sein de la FCSCA dans deux principaux domaines : i) par l'apport des « membres » à la FCSCA qui font partie en même temps du Conseil de la SCMO, et ii) par la surveillance exercée par lesdits membres et par un membre du conseil d'administration sans droit de vote, nommé d'office par la SCMO, qui s'assurent que les règlements et les modalités opérationnelles de la FCSCA répondent aux exigences exposées dans l'Entente tripartite régissant ses activités. Les membres de la FCSCA élisent également le Conseil d'administration de la Fondation à partir d'une liste des candidatures d'un Comité des candidatures dirigé par l'administrateur d'office de la SCMO.
La FCSCA accroît la capacité scientifique du Canada et soutient l'éclosion et la dissémination de la connaissance dans des disciplines d'importance nationale et de pertinence stratégique en appuyant plus particulièrement la recherche universitaire d'excellence dans le domaine des sciences du climat et de l'atmosphère.
This Committee acts to promote the geosciences within Canada. CMOS is responsible for nominating members of this committee to represent the interests of IAMAS (International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences) and IAPSO (International Association of the Physical Sciences of the Ocean).
Ce Comité fait la promotion des sciences de la terre au Canada. La SCMO est en charge de nommer des membres de ce Comité pour représenter les intérêts de l'IAMAS (Associaton internationale de météorologie et des sciences de l'atmosphère) et de l'IAPSO (Association internationale des sciences physiques appliquées à l'océan).

PAGSE is a cooperative association of more than 20 Canadian organizations
in science and engineering formed at the invitation of the Academy of Science
of the Royal Society of Canada to foster common interests and address issues
concerning research and applications of science in Canada. CMOS is
a member of this group.
Le PFST est une association coopérative regroupant plus de 20 organismes nationaux oeuvrant dans le domaine des sciences et de la technologie. Elle a été constituée à la demande de l'Académie des sciences de la Société royale du Canada pour faire valoir des intérets communs et étudier les grands dossiers intéressant la recherche et l'application des sciences au Canada. La SCMO est membre de ce regroupement.
This group is concerned with improving communication among geoscience societies around the world and, as appropriate, with promoting joint activities. A formal meeting is held at each General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics. CMOS is a member of this group.
Ce groupe se préoccupe d'améliorer la communication entre les sociétés géoscientifiques à travers le monde et, de plus, à faire promouvoir les activités conjointes. Une réunion régulière a lieu lors de l'assemblée générale de l'Union géodésique et géophysique internationale. La SCMO est membre de ce groupe.
The Canadian Consortium for Research (CCR) was established in 1976.
It consists of 22 organizations
that represent researchers in all disciplines across Canada. While the
majority of these researchers are based in universities, the constituent
organizations have numerous members in government laboratories and in private
sector research centres. With an estimated 50,000 researchers and 400,000
students represented in these member groups, the CCR is the largest organization
in Canada whose primary concerns are the funding of research in all sectors
and support for post-secondary education.
