- Duties: The
main
duty of associate-editors is to manage the peer-review of manuscripts
referred by one of the editors of the journal, specifically:
·
After reading/skimming
through the manuscript, determine whether the quality of the language
is sufficient to be easily understandable by ordinary peers. If not,
advise the editor immediately so that he/she can return the manuscript
for language editing.
·
Contact a number of
scientists recognised as experts or knowledgeable on the topic of the
manuscript with the aim of selecting a minimum of two to perform a
thorough review.
·
Review the reviewers’
comments and, in case of conflicting comments, invite an additional
reviewer (or personally perform the in-depth review).
·
Ensure that the science
discussion is complete, all referenced graphs and equations present,
etc
·
Drawing from the review
comments, recommend acceptance, minor revision, major revision,
rejection with invitation to resubmit, or rejection, for the editor’s
final decision.
·
For revised
manuscripts,
determine the appropriateness of organising a new peer-review or
immediately recommend a decision to the editor.
- Submissions: Associate
editors are encouraged to solicit submissions to the journal and to
submit their own papers (without obligation and without expectation of
preference).
- Communications: The
interactions between the associate editors, the editor
and the
reviewers are conducted through the ScholarOne
manuscript submission and review system. This system has set deadlines
for the completion of the various steps and will automatically send
reminders in case of delays. Both the deadlines and the content of
automated messages can be altered by the associate-editors when
necessary.
- Ethics:
Associate-editors are bound by ethical principles common to most
journals. Atmosphere-Ocean accepts the guidelines published by the
American Meteorological Society at
http://ametsoc.org/pubs/authorsguide/authorseditorsreviewersguide.pdf.
- Editorial Board:
Associate-editors, together with the editors and director of
publications of the CMOS form the A-O Editorial Board. This is the
forum where policies and procedures of the journal are discussed and
established. The Board normally meets once annually in conjunction with
the CMOS Congress, but may also be consulted electronically at other
times. In practice, the director of publications, the three scientific
editors and the technical editor form the executive committee of the
Editorial Board responsible for day-to-day management of the journal.
- Appointment:
Associate-editors are appointed by one of the editors to cover a broad
domain of science, as required. The appointment is normally for five
years, renewable.
Appendix: Types of
recommendations to responsible editor:
Accept:
nothing
substantial needs to be changed
Minor
revision: the
paper should acceptable after some clarifications, extra documentation,
simplifications
Major
revision: the
paper seems to offer new results and findings, but there are
significant omissions, errors of logic, insufficient proof, failures to
build on existing literature, etc
Reject and
re-submit: the papers seems promising but it has to be completely
re-written to include more data, better proofs, more references to
previous work
Reject: the
paper is
weak or contains very little new: it does not deserve to be published.
Reject without review:
the paper falls outside the scope of this journal, or the written
English or French is far below the standard expected of publications in
international scientific literature.
